Al-Biruni, mentioned above, was a great encyclopedic scholar and, in addition, an excellent geographer (he wrote a geographical work called the Book of the People, as well as books on geography). He was born in the 770s and died in 837. He wrote many works on minerals and animals, but his studies in geography brought him the greatest fame. Al-Biruzniye is one of the most famous Sufi sheikhs of the eighth century.
